25 55mm Macro Tube Accessory, Camera Lens Adapter Rings M42 to M42 Adjustable Focusing Helicoid Lens Adapter
content
This is an all-aluminum M42-to-M42 adapter that contains an internal helical to expand from 25mm to 55mm in length as you rotate the focusing ring. The mounted lens does not rotate as you change the length of this adapter. It works well, and I don’t see any indication of tilt or decentering in the adapter. The two larger-than-lifesize macro photos attached here were taken using an old Mamiya/Sekor 55mm f/1.8 on this adapter in turn mounted on an M42-to-FE adapter on my Sony A7RII; one is the thumbnail of this adapter photographed off my LCD monitor screen (you can see the RGB bars for each pixel), the other is part of an iris bloom.I have a few similar M42 focusing tubes. Although they vary in focus ring texturing and length ranges, they all have very similar functionality. Just like the others, the focus on this one makes a very gentle rubbing sound and the M42 thread feels slightly rough, but neither issue is a serious problem. Although I tend to 3D-print custom adapters, a lot of folks also use these types of focusing tubes to piece-together custom mounts for adapting lenses that don’t have focus mechanisms, and they work as well for that purpose as for shooting macros. In summary, this is a solid-feeling aluminum product, but it operates notably less smoothly than the focus mechanisms in most manual lenses. However, that level of roughness seems to be the norm for such adapters and has no impact on functionality, and the price here is reasonable.
